Plakias is the perfect holiday spot, located on the south coast of Crete. It is not too large, and so retains the traditional Cretan friendliness, but it is big enough to have a good range of accommodation, tavernas, shops etc. The beautiful south facing curved bay with 1.5 km length in which it sits is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The hills behind provide wonderful walks, on trails through the olive groves and beyond. A wealth of sightseeing attractions is available in and around Plakias. The Mon Preveli monastery and museum is worth a visit to sample some of the area’s history. Boat trips can be made from Plakias harbour to beauty spots such as Preveli Beach and the remote but stunning beaches of Agios Pavlos. A trip to Crete’s third largest town, Rethymnon, will provide plenty of shopping opportunities and excellent seafood restaurants down by the vibrant Venetian harbour. Plakias in Southern Crete is a wonderful centre for walking. Set in a wide bay, the resort is still small, with unspoiled villages set in the hills behind it. A chain of mountains up to 3000ft overlook Plakias. The mountains isolate the area (road access is via two large and spectacular gorges) and have so far helped preserve its solitude and identity.
